Key Dates at a Glance
Several of these changes are already in effect. The rest fall between now and January 1, 2027, and the Secretary of State system change is the most time-sensitive.

Income Tax Rates: 4.55% in 2026, 3.99% in 2027
For tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2026, Nebraska's individual income tax has four brackets: 2.46%, 3.51%, 4.55% and 4.55%. The top bracket starts at $39,900 for single filers and $79,800 for joint filers. The prior top rate was 5.20%.
Corporate income tax is a flat 4.55% on all Nebraska taxable income for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2026, down from 5.20% in 2025.
Under Neb. Rev. Stat. 77-2715.03 (individuals) and 77-2734.02 (corporations), the rate drops to 3.99% from January 1, 2027.
What this means for your entity depends on how it is taxed. An LLC taxed as a partnership or sole proprietorship passes income through to its members, who report it on their Nebraska individual returns. An LLC taxed as a corporation pays the corporate rate instead. The state sales and use tax rate is 5.5%. A CPA can model which structure and filing approach works best for your numbers.
Minimum Wage: $15.00 Since January 1, 2026
Under Neb. Rev. Stat. 48-1203, the Nebraska minimum wage became $15.00 an hour on January 1, 2026. Beginning January 1, 2027, the minimum wage rises 1.75% each January 1.
Build the annual increase into your 2027 payroll budget and review pay bands for entry-level roles. Confirm the published figure for each year with the Nebraska Department of Labor before you change pay rates, because the exact amount is set by the agency's annual announcement.
Paid Sick Time: Employers with 11 or More Employees
Paid sick time began October 1, 2025, for employers with 11 or more employees. If your headcount meets that threshold, you need a system for tracking leave, including how time accrues and how employees request it. Confirm the accrual, use and recordkeeping rules with the Department of Labor, and ask the agency whether any obligations apply to employers below 11 employees.
$40 Contractor Registration Fee (August 1, 2026)
The Nebraska Department of Labor set a $40 contractor registration fee effective August 1, 2026. The Department of Labor also handles unemployment tax registration, so check its contractor registration requirements if your business does construction work. The registration applies to contractors and subcontractors who do work on real property other than their own; confirm with the Department of Labor whether your work qualifies before you assume the fee applies to you.
Secretary of State: New Online System on December 7, 2026
On December 7, 2026, the Nebraska Secretary of State moves online reinstatements, name checks and trade name renewals to a new system. You will need an account at business.nebraska.gov. The current eDelivery portal handles filings now, so do not assume your existing login or process will carry over. Create your account before you need it, especially if a filing or renewal is close to its deadline.
Core Secretary of State Filings and Fees
- LLC Certificate of Organization: $100 filing fee. Nebraska requires new LLCs and corporations to publish a notice in a legal newspaper for three successive weeks, then file proof of publication with the Secretary of State.
- Corporation Articles of Incorporation: $100 filing fee. The filer drafts the document, and it may be submitted through eDelivery.
- LLC biennial report: $25 filed electronically or $30 on paper. File it in odd-numbered years between January 1 and April 1. The company is delinquent after June 16, and a delinquent LLC can be administratively dissolved.
- Corporation biennial report and occupation tax: $26 at the statutory minimum for corporations with paid-up capital stock of $10,000 or less. The report is due March 1 of even-numbered years and is delinquent after April 15. Foreign corporations pay double that schedule, capped at $30,000.
- Name reservation: $30 for 120 days.
- Registered agent change: $25 online or $30 on paper.
Nebraska uses the term registered agent. Every LLC must continuously maintain a Nebraska office and an agent for service of process under Neb. Rev. Stat. 21-113. The agent must be an individual who resides in Nebraska, or another person or entity authorized to do business in the state, and the agent's office must match the registered office. Losing your agent can lead to administrative dissolution, so confirm your agent's status before the new system launches.
Trade Names and the New System
A trade name (a name you do business under that differs from your legal entity name) is registered with the Secretary of State and lasts 10 years. The application costs $100 online through eDelivery or $110 in person or by mail, and renewal costs $110. A separate newspaper publication is required, and the affidavit or proof of publication carries no fee. Trade name renewals move to the new system on December 7, 2026, so check your expiration date now. The application form is available from the Nebraska Secretary of State trade name application.
Federal Change: Beneficial Ownership Reporting Removed
Effective March 21, 2025, FinCEN's interim final rule removed beneficial ownership reporting requirements for U.S. domestic companies. This is a federal change, not a Nebraska one, and it covers U.S. domestic companies only. If your company has foreign ownership or a foreign-formed entity, check with FinCEN or your attorney about any reporting that may still apply.
Local Sales Tax and Good Life Districts
Local sales tax rates change city by city. The Nebraska Department of Revenue (DOR) lists the following scheduled changes:
- Norfolk: 2% effective April 1, 2025
- Edgar: 1.5% effective July 1, 2026
- Eagle and Hay Springs: 1.5% effective January 1, 2027
- Winside: new 1% local sales tax effective January 1, 2027
Since October 1, 2025, only the Avenue One Good Life District in Omaha keeps a reduced 2.75% state sales tax rate, and only for a retailer that elects to be a Good Life District retailer; the other Good Life Districts are back at the full 5.5% state rate. Check DOR and its Sales Tax Rate Finder for district boundaries and how this applies to your sales before you set prices or file returns.
City Occupation Taxes and the Annual Report Rule
Cities that add or raise an occupation tax after June 5, 2025 must post an annual report under Neb. Rev. Stat. 18-1208. If you operate in one of those cities, ask the city clerk for the posted report and confirm how the tax applies to your business.
Licensing Is Still Based on Activity
Nebraska has no general state business license and no county business license. Registration depends on what you do:
- Department of Revenue: Nebraska ID for sales tax and income tax withholding. Register online at DOR's new business registration page.
- Department of Labor: unemployment tax and contractor registration.
- Secretary of State: entity filings and trade names.
Occupational licensing is handled by agency or trade:
- State Electrical Division: licenses electricians. Confirm any electrician fee changes with the division and the Legislature.
- City or village: licenses plumbers, through the city or village nearest the job.
- Department of Agriculture: permits food and pesticide applicators.
- DHHS: licenses health professions and child care.
- Public Service Commission: regulates only passenger carriers and household goods movers.
- Liquor Control Commission: works with the city or county that grants retail liquor licenses.
Local requirements also include city sales taxes, city occupation taxes, and city and county zoning. Nebraska has 93 counties and 528 municipalities (cities and villages), so the local rules that apply to you depend on where you operate.
